Sidney has landed in Phoenix, Arizona! Phoenix is America’s fifth-largest city and still has cowboys and the kind of cactus most people see only in cartoons. It is the heart of the Sonoran Desert and the gateway to the Grand Canyon, and its history is a testament to the spirit of puebloans, ranchers, miners and visionaries.

Its 65 degrees and sunny here in Phoenix and Sidney is enjoying the desert sun. The dependable sunshine and warm temperatures make outdoor activities a way of life in Phoenix. Horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking and rock climbing are also popular. Thrill seekers can soar above the desert plateau in a glider, sailplane or hot-air balloon.

Today Sidney will visit the South Mountain Park, encompassing more than 16,000 acres and the Heard Museum, featuring one of the nation’s largest collections of traditional and contemporary Native American art, and he’ll end his day visiting the Desert Botanical Garden with more than 50,000 desert plants.

Before heading back to the hotel for a good night’s rest, Sidney dines at the Adobe Café where he enjoys a warm Mexican inspired salad and a glass of water with fresh lemon.

Phoenix and its neighboring communities are also home to more than 200 golf courses. Some courses occupy desert canyons where civilization feels a world away, while others are part of resorts. Today Sidney will take in a round of golf, getting some sunshine and exercise will help him start the day off right!

Phoenix is a city that has not forgotten its past, as evidenced by the Southwestern architecture and Native American influences woven into the daily lifestyle of Phoenix residents.
Phoenix’ earliest inhabitants were the Hohokam Indians, who thrived in the region until about 1450 AD. There is no record of the Hohokam after that, although they are believed to be ancestors of the Pima Indians. In the Pima language “hohokam” means “those who have gone."

Sidney takes a lunch break at the Apache Point Ranch and enjoys a Southern style chicken wrap, hold the dressing! Sidney’s next stop is the Phoenix Art Museum, the largest destination for visual art from across the world. The Phoenix Art Museum displays international exhibitions alongside the museum’s comprehensive collection of more than 18,000 works of American, Asian, European, Latin American, Western American, modern and contemporary art, and fashion design.

Before Sidney hits the next stop on the map, Denver, he stops at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital Dialysis Center where he gives young patients a lesson on how their kidney’s work. He hands out coloring books, crayons and balloons. He’s learned more from these children and their resilient spirits and he’s so grateful he got the time to visit.
